We invest in Southern and Appalachian leaders, places, and stories to build durable, community-driven change in regions that have long created power but rarely received its resources.

Mission

The Etolia Fund invests in community-rooted leaders, organizations, and infrastructure across the American South and Appalachia. These regions have powered social, economic, and cultural progress for generations while being structurally underfunded by philanthropy.

We direct capital, capacity, and connection toward equity-centered efforts that are building durable change where it’s long existed—but rarely been resourced.

Vision

We envision a future where proximity, not prestige, determines access to philanthropic support—and where communities with deep wisdom and lived experience have the tools, trust, and capital to shape the systems that most affect them.

Our work supports leadership that is anchored in place, accountable to community, and capable of shaping narratives, institutions, and policy.

Values

Rootedness
We invest in places we come from, not just where visibility is highest. Our Southern and Appalachian focus reflects a belief that equity must be built where power has historically been extracted.

Redistribution
We don’t just give; we return. We see our role as redirecting resources to the people, movements, and institutions who have long been excluded from capital flows.

Proximity
We trust those closest to the work. That means leaders who are embedded in their communities, responsive to real-world dynamics, and accountable to the people they serve.

Access
We challenge philanthropic gatekeeping by funding outside of closed networks, application-heavy processes, and institutional bias. We invest based on potential, impact, and trust.
